This extensive build-out of an unfinished lower level began with a detailed set of drawings. The space is reached by a finely-crafted staircase that winds to reveal an elegant gallery open to a dining room, game room, gathering room, kitchen and exercise room.

The gathering room (as well as others in the project) features an impressive arched ceiling and large windows that bring in wonderful natural light. Crown molding, wood floors and decorative columns complete the look.

The dining room continues the arched ceiling detail of the gathering room. This is an elegant solution to provide utility runs and allow for recessed lighting that spotlights the dining table and the beautiful painting. Custom-made built-ins on either side of the entrance to the wine room repeat the arch of the ceiling and contain their own lighting. Between the built-ins is an arched entryway with a pair of hand-wrought, iron gates that lead to the wine room.

Inside the wine room, guests can relax in comfortable chairs as they compare favorite vintages. Wood paneling and a limestone facing on opposite walls create an authentic atmosphere. The impressive temperature- and humidity-controlled wine cellar is lined with custom cabinetry to hold hundreds of bottles. The wine room was also recently recognized as a recent winner in the Detroit Home design awards.

This impressive pool house has a classically-inspired design. Its glass doors slide into pockets in the walls to completely open the space.

On the pool side of the structure, columns echo those on the building and feature tab-top drapes that give a sense of drama and enclosure to the spaces. Bluestone is used for all the walking surfaces for its perfect grip when wet and great natural color.

The pool house interior has a large central room flanked by a fully-equipped kitchen, shower and changing rooms.

Natural slate is used in the shower; the floor tiles are the same bluestone as is used on the outside.
